Unit 1: Poetry
Resources:
(1) Poetry Booklet 1, a compilation of poems organized and distributed by HTH teachers.
(2) Views & Viewpoints: A Collection of Various Text Forms (2014) McGraw- Hill Ryerson: Whitby.
(3) Poetry Booklet 2, question sheets for final 2 poems
Objective: to analyze poetry
Poetry Booklet 1
(A) Students have been provided with Poetry Booklet 1 (legal length - file below ) containing notes on the following:
(i) Reading for Meaning
(ii) Types of Poetry
(iii) Poetic Terms
These notes have been reviewed and discussed in class.
(B) Poetry Booklet 1 also contains questions for student analysis in the following selections:
1. Identity Crisis (by: Monica Holliday)
2. It's Good to Be Here (by: Alden Nolan)
3. To Be of Use (by: Marge Piercey)
4. Hero (by: Sheree Fitch)
5. Where There's a Wall (by: Joy Kogawa)
We are completing Poetry Booklet 1 during class time. However, work not completed during class is expected to be completed at home.

Poetry Test: Wednesday, October 5th, 2017 - students are expected to review class notes and handouts in their preparation for their independent analysis of an unseen poem.
In-Class Poetry Assignment: DUE: Wednesday, October 11th, 2017. Students will have been given 2 classes to complete a letter to their future child,nieve or nephew offering advice.
Spoken Word Poetry:
- Students have completed a Spoken Word Booklet in class.
- They will now begin to draft their own Spoken Word Poem.
- Two classes (Friday, Oct. 20 and Monday, Oct. 23) will be devoted to the creation of independent Spoken Word poems. Students may need further time at home to complete their poem.
- Students will collaborate with their classmates and conduct peer reviews on Tuesday, Oct.24th before they finalize their spoken word poems.
- Spoken Word poems will be presented in class on Friday, October 27th, 2017.
- Instructions, Rubrics and helpful hints are found in the documents below.

- The novel Night by Elie Weisel was distributed to students on October 3rd for independent reading.
- Students should have the novel completely read for Monday, October 30th.
- Students completed a reading quiz on November 1, 2017.
- In class: students will be working on a Night booklet. Students may choose to answer via hard copy in a booklet provided to them in class OR online in my Google classroom.

Unit 4: Visuals
Students have been provided with a Visuals Booklet. We have reviewed visual terminology and a Visuals Powerpoint. All work will be completed in class.

MANDATORY MIDTERM LISTENING EXAM: Tuesday, January 16th, 2018, 8:15 am
Students in my class will attend room 208 (Mr. Normore) at 8:15 AM on Tuesday. Listening notes and test format have been reviewed with all students. Notes are attached.
Supplementary Midterm Listening Exam: Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 10:25 in room 217. - Guardians of students who missed the mandatory midterm exam listening assessment have been contacted by Administration. Those students have also received a letter confirming the new date. It is the students responsibility to attend the supplementary listening exam.
